Faculty Services
The University Writing Center Wants to Partner with You!
We support our students best when we are in conversation with those teaching in the classroom. We can work with you to plan and design assignments and prompts, develop best practices for giving feedback on writing or other kinds of texts, and meet your instructional needs.
What We Can Provide
- Syllabus Statements: The UWC has several templates for syllabus statements about the services of the UWC. You can copy and paste one of them into your syllabus and adapt it to fit your course.
- Required or Extra Credit Visits: The UWC welcomes and supports faculty who wish to require visits or offer extra credit for students in their classes who visit the UWC. To ensure that these visits are effective and logistically manageable, we ask that you review this page before including this information in your syllabus or assignments.
UWC Intro Class Presentations: Our intro presentation takes about 10 minutes and gives a brief who, what, when, where, how, and why of the UWC. We are happy to accommodate both in-person and virtual intro presentations. To schedule a UWC Intro Presentation, please click on this link: Request a Presentation.
UWC Intro Video: We also have a UWC Intro Video (3:11) that you can that you can show your students or upload to your Canvas course.
Mock Tutoring Live Demo: The mock tutoring live demo is a live demonstration of a typical tutoring session. In this demo, two UWC representatives take on the role of student and consultant to demonstrate how a typical writing center conference works. The goal is to demystify the writing center experience and demonstrate the collaborative nature of a session. These typically range from 25-30 minutes and can be customized to fit the needs of your course. Mock tutoring demos are typically more useful early in the semester. To schedule a Mock Tutoring Demo, please click on this link: Request a Presentation.
Mock Tutoring Demo Video: We also have a Mock Tutoring Video (5:16) that you can show your students or upload to your Canvas course.
Writing Workshops: We offer a range of writing workshops on topics related to writing. In these workshops, one to two UWC representatives come to your class to present on a topic. Some customization of standard workshops can be accommodated. Current workshop topics include:
- Concise Writing (15 minutes)
- Personal Statements (60 minutes)
- MLA Citation and Formatting (30 minutes)
To schedule a Writing Workshop, please click on this link: Request a Presentation.
- UWC Class Tours: Bring your students to the UWC in Moody Library for a brief, interactive tour. Tours provide an overview of our services, introduce students to peer consultants, and include a Q&A to address any questions you or your students may have. Tailored to your course needs, these tours encourage early engagement with writing support and help demystify the writing center experience. To schedule a tour, please complete the Request a Tour Form.
- Instructional Consultations: Our professional staff is happy to work with you in designing your writing assignment prompts. We can help you consider how to compose the prompt, structure the assignment, scaffold mini assignments, and create a rubric. We can also provide guidance on how to effectively give feedback to students on their writing. If interested in a consultation, email us at UWC@baylor.edu.
- Feedback on Your Writing: As a faculty member, you are eligible to sign up for a one-on-one consultation. We recommend signing up with a graduate consultant.
Policies for Presentations
Before placing a request, please read our policies:
- Advance Notice: To schedule a classroom presentation or workshop, please provide at least one week's notice. This ensures we have the necessary resources available. While we try to accommodate requests with less notice, early planning helps us serve you better.
- Workshop Requests: Each instructor may request up to four workshops per semester across all sections (excluding the UWC Intro Presentation). This allows us to offer support to all interested faculty.
- Minimum Attendance: To make the most of our time, we require at least five students/attendees for a classroom visit or workshop.
- Customized Presentations: If you need a presentation on a specific topic not listed above, please reach out at least two weeks in advance. This gives us ample time to prepare a presentation that meets your needs.
- Date Flexibility: While we strive to accommodate your preferred date, we may not always be able to guarantee it. We appreciate your flexibility and will work with you to find the best available option.
- Timing: We generally schedule appointments between 9am and 5pm Central Time. However, if we have availability, we do consider requests before 9am or after 5pm. We are not available on weekends or holidays.
- Instructor Presence: To ensure a successful session, we ask that an instructor or representative from your organization be present during the presentation or workshop.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We look forward to working with you!
