Consultations

What We Offer

We offer three types of tutoring sessions for writers: in-person tutoring, video conferencing, and written feedback. Our sessions are 50 minutes and we can typically get through 4-5 pages of a piece of writing. We accept print-based writing (e.g., research papers, grant proposals, conference papers, reports, personal statements) and multimodal or digital compositions (e.g, audio and video essays, posters, brochures, flyers, websites). Choose the session that works best for your stage of writing and your writing project. You can make an appointment here.

A Note on Session Types: In-person and video conference sessions offer unique advantages over written feedback in terms of the development of writing and communication skills, real-time interaction, collaboration, immediate feedback, and personalized guidance. They also allow the writer to ask questions, get help on specific writing needs, and practice applying the strategies to their writing in the presence of a consultant. In these ways, they are preferable over written feedback.

In-Person Tutoring

If you make an in-person appointment, you will meet with your consultant in the UWC's physical location in Moody Library (2nd floor West) during the time you’ve reserved. You’ll have up to 50 minutes to work with your tutor to discuss any parts of your writing or writing process. This is the most common choice for our clients, and we find that discussing your writing and ideas in person is the best way to brainstorm or revise a draft, understand the specific skills you need to work on, and improve as a writer.

To read more about in-person tutoring, visit the In-Person Tutoring page.

Video Conferencing

Video conferences mimic in-person appointments; the main difference is that the session is conducted online through either Zoom or WCOnline (the consultant will send you a link). This is a great choice for writers who want to meet face-to-face to discuss their writing but who can’t physically make it to the UWC. We ask that you keep your camera on if possible. You can make an appointment here.

Written Feedback

If you make a written feedback appointment, you’ll upload a copy of your writing/project and your assignment prompt to the online scheduling system (baylor.mywconline.com) for a tutor to review. A tutor will read your writing, comment on your draft, and send you a feedback letter within 48 business hours from the scheduled appointment. You don’t actually have to be present for the session. This option is a great choice for writers who are unable to discuss their writing synchronously (e.g., through an in-person or video conference appointment).
