Required and Extra Credit Visits
The University Writing Center (UWC) welcomes and supports faculty who wish to require visits or offer extra credit for students in their classes who visit the UWC. To ensure that these visits are effective and logistically manageable, we ask that you review the information below.
Required Visits
Required visits refer to instances where students are expected to attend a UWC session as part of their coursework. Visits can be required for an entire class or for individual students who need to compensate for missed work (e.g., a missed peer review). To avoid overwhelming our system, we recommend coordinating entire-class required visits well in advance of assignment deadlines.
Guidelines for Required Visits:
- Coordination: If you plan to require UWC visits for your entire class, please notify us by emailing UWC@baylor.edu at least two weeks before you’d like your students to begin coming. Include the course name/number, the number of students, the timing, and the specific assignment.
- Availability: While we will do our best to accommodate your students, we cannot guarantee that all students will be seen without prior coordination. We also cannot guarantee that all students will be seen during peak times (early fall semester, midterms, and finals). To better ensure that all students can be seen, spread visits over a reasonable time frame (such as two weeks).
- Alternative Options When Appointments Are Booked: If appointment slots are fully booked and your student cannot secure an appointment, encourage them to use walk-in hours or to join the waitlist.. You can also email us to see if we have any other solutions.
- Outreach Appointments: If requiring UWC visits for your entire class is not feasible due to class size or scheduling constraints, we offer outreach appointments. UWC staff can visit your class to offer writing workshops, group feedback, assignment-specific guidance, or general writing support. Please contact us at UWC@baylor.edu to discuss this option.
Extra Credit Visits
Extra credit visits incentivize students to visit the UWC by offering additional points on daily work, major assignments, or the final semester grade. Offering extra credit encourages student engagement, fosters motivation, and improves writing skills without overwhelming our appointment system. Because extra credit visits generally have a lighter impact on scheduling, prior coordination is not necessary.
Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to supporting your students’ writing development! For any further questions, please contact us at UWC@baylor.edu.
